Humanitarian Response following the explosion of the port of Beirut
The explosion at the Beirut port on August 4, 2020, was one of the most devastating disasters in modern Lebanese history. Caused by the detonation of over 2,700 tons of improperly stored ammonium nitrate, the blast claimed more than 200 lives, injured thousands, and displaced over 300,000 residents. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed, and critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, suffered extensive damage. The explosion not only left a physical scar on the city but also exacerbated Lebanon’s ongoing economic and political crises, fueling widespread public anger over government negligence and corruption. The international community responded with emergency aid, but the road to recovery has been long and fraught with challenges.
